Things to Do on Your Sem break

No school for two weeks? What could be any better than that? (Kidding!) Sembreak is the most awaited time of the year for students…and yes teachers. It’s the perfect time to unwind and well, take a break.
If you have not made any plans yet, these suggestions might help:

ROAD TRIP.  Pack your bags, gas up and gun that engine. Hit the road to God knows where. Road trips are perfect bonding experiences amongst family and friends. Oh and don’t forget the camera. It would be nice to capture candid moments during the trip.

READ. Catch up on your readings. The cheapest way to travel the world and discover new things at the comfort of your own home is by leafing your way through the pages of a book.

MOVIE/DVD MARATHON. This is one economical way to bond with the entire family and friends. This is your chance to watch missed episodes of your favorite TV series. For the girls, this is a perfect opportunity to finish the entire season of your most-loved koreanovelas.

SIGN UP FOR VOLUNTEER WORK. Some hospitals like the East Avenue Medical Center welcomes volunteers to spend a day making children with terminal illnesses happy by keeping them company. You can also sign up for volunteer work in cause-oriented groups as Gawad Kalinga, Bantay Bata and Sagip Kapamilya.
EXERCISE. It’s time to bring out those dumbbells, hula hoop, exercise ball, and yoga mat that have been sitting in the storage for a while. Invite some friends over and organize a work-out session. If not, you can go for a walk or run around the village. These are good forms of exercise as well.
GET A MAKEOVER. Get a new do – Mohawk for the boys and bangs for the girls. Pair it up with a new set of outfit and perhaps a pair of kicks to wit.

DECLUTTER. Clean up your closet. Separate the ones that you can still use and those that you can donate to charity or sell for extra cash.

10. SLEEP. Need I say more? For doing a job well done waking up early in the morning, doing well in class and staying up late at night studying, this is one thing you truly deserve.

Answers to job interview questions

My brother and sister have been, for the past few weeks, trying to get employed. They have been to a number of interviews already and I am hoping that both of them get to sign an employment contract very soon.

Speaking of interviews, I have compiled a list of questions that are commonly asked during job interviews and sample answers. This has helped me a great deal during my job-hunting days. I hope it does the same to you in a major major way.

Q
How would you describe yourself?
A
I'm a people person. I really enjoy meeting and working with a lot of different people. I'm efficient and highly organized. This enables me to be as productive as possible on the job.

Q
What is your greatest strength?
A
My time management skills are excellent and I'm organized, efficient, and take pride in excelling at my work.I pride myself on my customer service skills and my ability to resolve what could be difficult situations.

Q
What is your greatest weakness?
A
I used to prefer working on one project at a time; wait till it's completed before starting on another. But I have learned to multi-task and I believe it made me more creative and effective working on many projects at the same time.

Q
What motivates you?
A
I have always been motivated by my drive to excel and do well in whatever position I'm in. I want to be successful in my job for both myself and my employer.

Q
Why should we hire you?
A
The best way to answer this question is to give a summary of your skills, experiences and accomplishments which makes you the best person for the job.

Q
What is your expected salary?
A
I'd like to more about the responsibilites and challenges that the job entails. After which, we can discuss the salary.

Use this as a guide and feel free to personalize your answers. Goodluck!

How to overcome fear of flying

I have always loved travelling. There's always the thrill and excitement of being in an unknown territory. Through my travels, I get the chance to discover a thing or two about the place, its people, history and culture. I get to taste its delicacies, frolic in its beaches, visit its popular spots, and bring home memories - both etched in mind and printed on photographs.

If there's one thing I don't like about travelling, it's flying. Turbulence, bad weather and thoughts of technical engine malfunction bring a big deal of anxiety to me while on board an aircraft.

So I went online and searched for articles on how I can overcome this fear of flying and found out a few helpful tips

Just close your eyes and imagine you are in a bus. According to the experts, turbulence is an everyday normal occurrence and should not be conceived by passengers as a point where pilots are desperately fighting to keep control of the aircraft. The best tip I have read to remain calm when an aircraft is experiencing turbulence is to pretend you are in a bus. I heed this advice during my trip to Vietnam and surprisingly, it worked.

Know how to identify the sounds. When a plane takes off, the landing gear is retracted and sometimes you will hear it. Also at some point the engine power is reduced and you might think that something is wrong or the engines have stopped working but everything is actually ok.

Practice breathing exercise. Inhale from your nose until your tummy expands, hold it for a few seconds and then release air through your mouth. Repeat the process.

Keep in mind that flying is actually the safest way to travel. Statistics show that the possibility of meeting your end is 500-1000 times higher on the road than while on air.

Educate yourself. Considered one of the best treatments to getting over the fear of flying, understanding how a plane flies, navigates in the air will in a way make you feel safer and calmer while flying.

Stay on the window seat. Instead of letting your mind travel to old flicks you have watched about plane crashes, let it settle on the beauty and wonder of God's creation seen through the clouds and colors created by the rising and setting of the sun.

We surely don't want to miss out on opportunities to travel to places by giving in to our fear of flying. So I say let's all conquer our fears and jet set to our next destination...with a rosary on hand.:)

Toys R Us Sale Big Toy Sale

Remember on a last post I said that this year, to save me from the hassle of last minute shopping which is one major cause of yuletide stress, I am doing an early shopping spree to start ticking off names from my Christmas list.

I decided with the ones who are easiest to please - the KIDS.

Luckily for me, Toys R Us is having a Big Toy Sale on October 6-13, 2011 and October 13-16, 2011 at the activity areas of Robinsons Place Metro East and Robinsons Galleria respectively.

Catch your favorite brands Barbie, Matchbox, Hot Wheels, Transformers, Disney and many more at discounted rates.

A bonus of a free toy awaits Metrobank Cardholders for every P2,000 spent.

As in the previous years, the area will surely be packed. Be very cautious of people around. Safeguard all your valuables and take care of you hard-earned money.

Happy shopping!
